Inherent conflict builds interest. Be careful with names. Concrete is better. Make sure the reader knows what's going on. Tell us what the character feels. Be careful about details that feel natural to the character but may be disorienting to the reader. Use word choice to bring out tone. Use contrasts to build interest. Consider letting the reader understand the character, quirks, interests, motivation.
