[DongWon] A Close Reading on Worldbuilding: Language as a Tool
[Mary Robinette] 15 minutes long.
[Dan] Because you're in a hurry.
[Howard] And we're not that smart.
[Mary Robinette] I'm Mary Robinette..

[DongWon] So, this week, continuing our close reading series on Arkady Martine's A Memory Called Empire, I wanted to dig into three very specific sections over the course of this book. Last week, we focused heavily on the opening. Here, I want to talk about how Arkady uses language as a tool. Both how she phrases things, or word choices, but also the way in which she uses the language of this culture, and then… Well, the culture of this culture, the literature, the poetry, the pop-culture, to communicate certain really important concepts about the book. So, the first one I really want to drill down on is on page 19, as she approaches the city. We touched on this very briefly last time. But there's a moment where Yskandr, her imago in her head, says, <the world>, and he says it in Teixcalaanli. So the quote here is
 
He said it in the Teixcalaan language, which made it a tautology: the word for "world" and the word for the "city" were the same, as was the word for "Empire." It was impossible to specify, especially in the high imperial dialect. One had to note the context.
 
This is such a fascinating idea to me. This communicates so much about this culture. I found, when I read this book for the first time, that sentence was dripping with menace for me. That was one of the scariest sentences in this book. Because the idea that this culture sees themselves as so important that their city is a tautology for the entire empire is fascinating. This is all ours. Right? Going back to last episode, we talked about how they were looking at the star chart, and there's this moment where they're like, "All the tiny pinpricks of light. That's ours." Then we see this concept not just in how they think about it, but embedded into the language. Because of the way language works, they can not think about it another way. There's no way for them to linguistically communicate the difference between us and our Empire. They are the Empire, in the most fundamental hardwired ways into their culture.
[Howard] As an extension of this… I don't remember specific examples from the book, but there's this idea that words like human and people and other are defined in such a way that if you are not Teixcalaanli, you might not qualify as human. Just based on the word that gets used. You might not qualify as people. The inherent othering of everybody who is not a member of the Empire is also dripping with menace.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah. That's one of the things that I marked, is that there… This happens with a lot of languages, that the word that they have for her, someone who is from outside the Empire, is barbarian. That's… Barbarian, alien. There's a point deeper in the book where someone corrects and says, "foreigner." It was like, "No, no, no. That's not the right… That's not the language that we use. We say foreigner." But it made me think of… In Icelandic, the word for foreigner is utlander, which is literally outlander. Someone who's not from here. My family will say, "us folks." To mean anyone who is connected to our family or friends. Like, us folks. This demarcation that she does in her worldbuilding with this… By identifying you're either part of the Empire or you are less than human, is like… The way that the language is structured is so… Such really yummy worldbuilding.
[Howard] There's an aspect of this we're going to touch on in an episode I'll be driving shortly, which is the line where she says, "What do you mean by us?"
[Chuckles]
[Howard] "What do you mean by we?"
[DongWon] Exactly.
[Howard] "What do you mean by me?" We come back to that all the time as we are having arguments about grouping and alliance and identity. And it is delicious to me. So delicious.
[DongWon] Well, there's that moment, also fairly early on in the book, where they end up playing a little game where they each have to tell a truth when asked about it, and Three Seagrass is forced to admit that she likes aliens.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[DongWon] And it is treated as this perversion, it's treated as this embarrassing fact, of like, "Oh, my God. I can't believe you like that." I don't know what the comparison is in our culture, but you can feel… When you establish culture in this way, when you establish language in this way, then, suddenly, the idea of liking on alien does suddenly feel perverse. You can suddenly see how inside this culture, if they don't even have a word that isn't exclusionary, that of course, it would be strange to want to be close to somebody that is not us.
 
[Dan] Yeah. You mentioned Three Seagrass. That's one of the really cool language things I want to get into, is the naming conventions that they use in this culture. Three Seagrass is kind of sort of a main character. But everyone has a name kind of like that. Arkady goes and explains, like, that they use a number and then they use a word. My favorite name, and I can't remember exactly, but it was Seventeen All Terrain Vehicle… Thirty-six?
[Howard] Thirty-Six! Thirty-six.
[Dan] Thirty-six. There it is.
[DongWon] All-Terrain Tundra Vehicle.
[Dan] Yeah.
[DongWon] This is one of my favorite parts of this book. It is a line that made me laugh so hard when I first read it.
[Dan] Yeah.
[DongWon] And it's also a very emotionally significant line for me, because one of the things this book is about is about the concept of assimilation. Right? Names are very fraught when you are a child of immigrants or when you are an immigrant to another culture. Names become a very difficult, fraught topic. Right?
[Dan] Yeah.
[DongWon] I'm unusual among my peers because I use a Korean name. I don't use an Americanized name. Most of the other Koreans I know, or other Asian Americans in general, have names that are very typical, usually very Judeo-Christian names, picked out of a baby book or picked from the Bible. I don't have that. Well, I do have one. I'm not telling you what it is, because I hate it more than anything. But I do have un-American name. My brother has an American name. We both used our Korean style names. That choice has been one that has been an ongoing challenge for me over the course of my life, because my name, unfortunately, also happens to sound like a famous character from literature. So I get one joke every single time I introduce myself to a new person. That is repeated over and over again. I also have a thing where I cannot quite pronounce my name correctly. You'll hear me say it in a mostly Americanized way on the show, which is DongWon, which is how I, for years and years, introduced myself to white Americans. I have recently been shifting a little bit to something closer to the Korean pronunciation, which is more like [done one]. That has been a shift I've been trying to make. It's kind of hard to do. Because I'm used to saying it in a certain way. But all of this is to say that names are so important, because they identify you in the culture. They can be exclusionary, and they can be an invitation in. So, this idea that this person came to this culture and named themselves Thirty-Six All-Terrain Tundra Vehicle, which is hilarious to us as the audience, but it is also hilarious to the people in the culture. The line that comes after that is:
 
A revelation that produced in Mahit and Three Seagrass a kind of stunned silence.
 
[Chuckles]
 
"No one would actually name a child that," Three Seagrass complained after a moment. He has no taste.
 
[DongWon] This idea of taste is so important, because this is clearly someone who wasn't born to this culture. They identify that immediately. This person has desperately reached for something that sounds right to them, and they're like, "Well, that's a number, and that's a noun." But it's an absurd noun.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[Dan] Yeah.
[DongWon] And it's the wrong kind of number.
[Howard] For English speakers, there is an unwritten… Mostly… Rule about adjective order. We can tell when adjectives are in the wrong order. You will often see people string together adjectives in instruction manuals or whatever, and you realize, "Oh. Oh, you didn't get the memo about the way adjectives are supposed to work." The fake AP stylebook said, "Adjectives should be listed in increasing awesomeness. The blue Italian rocket-propelled monkey-piloted motorcycle." I've always laughed at that, because it follows both rules. I was reminded of that by Thirty-Six All-Terrain Tundra Vehicle. Three Seagrass is given pause because, oh, that's technically right, but you ran afoul…
[Laughter]
[Howard] Of a very different rule.
[DongWon] Yeah.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
 
[DongWon] And another worldbuilding bit is communicated in this. Right? Because the names are one of the striking things. Soon as you meet Three Seagrass, soon as you meet Twelve Azalea, Six Direction, all these people, we get the sense of like, "Wow. What a weird way to name people." Right? Like, from our perspective, as the reader, it feels alien and cool. This joke is an opportunity for the author to say, "Okay. Here's what's going on. Here's how this works."
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[DongWon] "You pick a number, you pick a noun, these kinds of nouns are good, these kinds of numbers are good." Like, you get a sense… It's an opportunity for her to just stop and tell us. Going back to show, don't tell, this is her way of saying, "I'm going to take a break here. I'm going to explain what is going on with these. So that you experience the delight of running into them the first time. We're far enough into the book that I can slow down and tell you what's going on here."
[Mary Robinette] Just to talk about the specific mechanics of one of the things that Arkady is doing with this. She's… When she slows down and explains it, she is also making it about something else. She's making it about a bonding moment between these two characters, and she's also using… There's a flash… Brief flashback that Mahit has where she remembers vividly part of her early language training on Lsel when her entire class had been encouraged to make up Teixcalaanli names to call themselves while they were learning to speak. She picked Nine Orchid because it was the heroine of her favorite book. It… She… So she's having this moment where she's explaining it to us, and it's a tell moment. Because she's like, "This is how these lang… These words… These names work." But she's also masking it by having it be… Doing some loadbearing on character. Doing loadbearing on history. She's having this moment do multiple different things. So when you have something like this that you need to explain to your reader, look at the different things it can be doing, so that it's not just, week, let me stop the story.
[DongWon] Yep. Exactly.
[Howard] I… To me, this got a pass because I laughed at the name.
[Laughter]
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[Howard] Any time you can make me laugh, that page had a reward. Thank you for making me read it.
[DongWon] Yeah.
[Mary Robinette] Well, I will also say the other thing that happens for me is that because she slows down here, when… Much deeper in the book, when Six Helicopter…
[Chuckles]
[Mary Robinette] Comes in, we know that his name is also absurd. So, we are in the joke…
[Dan] Yeah.
[Mary Robinette] With everybody else who's having that moment.
[DongWon] Well, again, all of this speaks to the core thematics of the book. These… It's a funny moment, it's a character moment, it's all these things, but it's also a moment that is about Empire and how it works. The thing that she talks about in terms of the flashback is a thing that if you go to an Asian country there in a language school, they're all picking American names. Right? In South Asia, in Korea, in Japan, China, they're going to pick an American name so that they have that thing, in the same way that Mahit picks Nine Orchid.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[DongWon] To be her Teixcalaanli name. She's reflecting all these real-world themes, routing it in things that are familiar to us, so that we understand what Empire means and how that works in our world. On that note, we're going to take a quick break. When we come back, we're going to keep unpacking some of these very specific examples of language.
 
[Mary Robinette] The Gilded Age on Max is the latest offering from Julian Fellowes, best known for Downton Abbey. This is set in 1882 in New York City among the ultra-wealthy. It's got social battles between new money and the established social crowd. It looks at class and race, and also just straight up romance. I'll be honest, the plots are not surprising, but they are somehow still captivating and moving. Sometimes I get a little mad when I'm crying, because I could see it coming, but I was still excited to get there. It's a good example of why formulas can work. Also, the costumes… If you are at all into fashion and history, the costumes are exhaustively researched and are often replica of extant downs or paintings. Check out The Gilded Age for a lot of very pretty, pretty clothes.
 
[Dan] All right. So, one thing that I wanted to talk about here is another neat trick that Arkady is using. The culture is kind of sort of… Well, at least linguistically, has a lot of Aztec influence in it.
[DongWon] Yes.
[Dan] Teixcalaan is an overtly Aztec-ish word. One of the reasons that I suspect she may have made that decision is precisely because the words are hard to pronounce. Right? Teixcalaan, which would be [Taishkalan] in actual Aztec, I think it was an overt purposeful choice to pronounce it more westernized than that, just to kind of continue the theme of cross culture stuff. That's the name of the Empire, and the name of the city, and the name of the planet. Something that comes from Teixcalaan is Teixcalaanli. The word for a person who is from Teixcalaan or the people from there is Teixcalaanlitzlim. You get these words and you kind of stumble over them. I think that that's on purpose. As a way of really hitting home, this is different. This is outside of your realm of experience. This is outside of your comfort zone. You are trying to assimilate these very difficult linguistic concepts. It also signals to the reader that language matters. Like, I am going to make you figure out how to say Teixcalaanlitzlim, and you're going to do it and that is going to let you know to pay close attention to the language, because it is worth this effort.
[DongWon] She's doing a thing where she manages to make the reader feel the subjectivity of what it is to be an immigrant. Right? She forces the reader into the position of being a foreigner to a culture. Which, I think we talked about audience surrogates earlier. But this is such, like, a grounded way, and such a material way to make that felt. The way she does that is by introducing a con lang in some ways. Right? A constructed language in some ways. We don't get all of it, but we get some parts of it. And introducing culture. The poetry, the epic poems, the different refrains. Even when we get a couplet that is an epithet for a person. Right? When Nine Ads appears… Nineteen Ads? Or Nine Ads?
[Mary Robinette] Nineteen Ads.
[DongWon] Nineteen. There's that beautiful epithet that she has about the edge shine of a knife.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[DongWon] Right? What a remarkable striking moment, and, wow, did that establish a character…
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[DongWon] Immediately. Like, to be referred to poetically as the edge shine of a knife.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[DongWon] How terrifying that person has to be.
 
[Howard] One of the things that she never did, Arkady never did, was use the word meme. The Teixcalaan… Teixcalaanli culture is, especially with the poetry, is inherently memetic.
[DongWon] Yes.
[Howard] All the time, people will make references, will say things, and Mahit realizes, "Oh, that last thing is a line from this poem about the buildings, and so what you're saying is not just thing but also referencing a building." That idea comes back over and over. We see it in our own culture as people will make pop-culture references. Oh, I understand that joke.
[DongWon] Yep.
[Howard] And everybody is now on board. I loved that she did it and was frankly amazed that she did it without ever using the word meme.
[DongWon] Yeah. I mean, I think that's a great comparison. As someone who's chronically online, I'm capable of having a conversation with my friends that is impenetrable to an outsider, based on the number of memes and references that we're making. 
 
[DongWon] I want to show how this is used in the text in a way that I found particularly fascinating. This is another one of my very favorite moments. It's from page 86, for those of you who have the print edition. This is when the bomb in the café goes off, which Howard mentioned a couple episodes ago. So…
 
She knew the Teixcalaanli word for explosions, a centerpiece of military poetry, usually adorned with adjectives like "shattering" or "fire-flowered," but now she learned, by extrapolation from the shouting, the one for "bomb." It was a short word. You could scream it very loudly. She figured it out because it was the word people were screaming when they weren't screaming help.
 
I am obsessed with this paragraph.
[Dan] Yeah.
[DongWon] It is so powerful, it is so upsetting. It communicates the true horror of what has just happened to her and the people around her, and it tells us so much about Mahit as well. Her first thing is to go to this cerebral abstraction…
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[DongWon] She retreats into academic thought and poetry before she returns to the word that they're screaming when they're not screaming help. Right?
[Mary Robinette] Also that there is a genre of military poetry.
[DongWon] Yes! Exactly. So in the way that Howard is talking about, this sort of memetic way of having culture, the word for explosion is part of that. Right? There are beautiful poems about fire-flowered explosions, but nobody talks about bombs.
[Dan] Well, it… That's another that goes back to our conversation about scale and the concept of how close are you to the subject that you're talking about. Because from far away, you can talk about a fire-flowered explosion and it sounds really cool. But when you're down there on the street, surrounded by rubble and smoke, it is a bomb. You need a word you can scream loudly.
[Howard] You are lying on the ground thinking, "Ah, I learned a new word."
[Laughter]
[DongWon] Also, who would teach you the word bomb to go on a diplomatic mission?
[Mary Robinette] No.
[DongWon] You don't need to know that.
[Mary Robinette] It reminds me briefly of when I was learning Icelandic, I initially was doing… Learn… Yes, I speak Icelandic a little bit. But there were two texts that I had a choice from. One of which taught me phrases like, "Where is the train station?" There are no train stations in Iceland.
[Laughter]
[Mary Robinette] There is no circumstance under which you would need to be able to say, "Where is the train station?" in Icelandic because you would have to be someplace else, where… Like, there aren't Icelandic speakers outside of Iceland except in Minnesota.
[DongWon] This is that damn Duo Lingua owl trying to convince me that I just need to know how to say, "the cat is under the pizza tables."
[Mary Robinette] Yes. But one of the other books, one of the… In the first or second chapter, one of the words that you learned was decapitation.
[Laughter]
[Mary Robinette] I was like, "This person has read Icelandic epics."
[DongWon] Yes.
[Dan] Yeah.
[Mary Robinette] That, for me, is one of the things about these, is, like… The things that… The other thing that is in this is, like, what is valorized?
[DongWon] Yeah.
[Mary Robinette] What is valorized? A bomb is not valorized. Explosions, yes, but explosions from starships that are… And warheads that are coming down. But not a handmade bomb in a café.
[Yeah]
[Mary Robinette] That's not a valorous experience.
[Dan] Well, correct me if I'm misremembering, because it has been a few years since I have read this, other than skimming it for these episodes. The… Don't they come back later and propagandize this explosion a little bit, this bomb? And just the language that they use to talk about it changes. It isn't a bomb anymore. It's a fire-flowered explosion. They're using it for political purposes by changing the words they use to describe it.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah. They're taking it from being common to being elevated.
[Yeah. Right!]
[DongWon] So, again, this is one of the these moments where so many layers of the story and character and world are in this. Right? So, just to recap in some ways, she's again explaining culture, how the culture works by starting on this poetic way, explaining the stakes of the book, because, hey. Mahit could get blown up. Her life is at risk. Right? She's communicating a different kind of risk than we've seen before. Up until now it's been political, it's been words. Bombs are in play now. Right? She's lying trapped under rubble while the person she came to meet is… Her blood is dripping on her face. It's a visceral terrifying moment. But, more than anything else, she's using this moment to communicate such fear and helplessness and pain. The way this shifts into this such an emotional place by the end of it, with, that, like, the word people are screaming. Right? Like, it's so grounding, and it's so scary, and it's so upsetting to communicate what violence actually is. That establishes the themes of the book, of we can talk about it at this abstract level, but the reality is this, and don't forget that.
 
[Howard] One of the first things that I try to do when I'm in a new place with a new language is learn how humor works. So that I might reach that high bar of being able to tell a joke. The moment that I was hoping for in this book… Quietly, but hoping nonetheless, with all of Mahit's appreciation of poetry and Three Seagrass's standing as an actual poet, I thought, "Wow. If that was me, the real horror would be what if I have to write a poem?"
[Chuckles]
[Howard] The stand up and cheer moment for me in this book was Mahit and Three Seagrass have to write a poem upon which their life literally depends.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[DongWon] Exactly.
[Howard] I love that so much, and the language aspect of the book supported it in a way…
[DongWon] Yeah.
[Howard] That… I stood up and cheered.
[Mary Robinette] Yeah.
[DongWon] Worldbuilding is storytelling.
 
[Mary Robinette] Yeah. Absolutely. She does a really great job of… One of the things for you, reader, when you're thinking about this is how many different ways can you use a piece of worldbuilding? So she's using language to do multiple different things. Which is part of why when we talk about muscular writing, that's what we're talking about, is having it do more than one thing.
[Howard] This is such a big flex.
[Laughter]
[Mary Robinette] Such a big flex.
[DongWon] I think we'll leave it on that.
 
[DongWon] I have a little bit of homework for you. I would like for you to write a scene that describes a fictional piece of literature. Whether it's a poem, a song, a story, comic book, that means something to the people in the story that you are telling.

Writing Excuses 15.26: Taking the Chance, with David Weber
 
 
Key points: Taking the chance, taking risks, is the only way to be successful. "He who will not risk cannot win." To succeed, take the risk of failing. If you don't submit, you can't make a sale. Be a storyteller. At some point, it will turn into work. Keep going. When you can't get the platonic ideal book on the page, what do you do? Write the damn book. Learn from it. Characterization is critical. You have to be you. Write the story that interests you. Choose your verbs wisely. Never bury dialogue inside a paragraph. Sentences are what you build books out of. Characters are what stories are about, sentences are how you tell the story. Get those two things right.

[Brandon] David Weber is one of the best-selling science fiction writers of all time, so we are super excited to have him. We are alive again at SpikeCon.

[Brandon] So, this topic was one that you suggested, David. The idea of taking the chance, meaning taking risks with your writing. What made you want to do this topic?
[David] Well, it's not just taking risks with your writing once you're an established writer. I cannot tell you how many people I've encountered who I think could have been successful writers, except that they were afraid to take the chance of failing at something that they had dreamed about. I could have been published easily 10 years earlier than I was if I hadn't kept finding excuses to do other things instead. That means I've been publishing for 30 years and I've lost a third of the time that I could have been published at this point. I mentioned in the preshow when I was talking to our hosts that there's a quote from John Paul Jones which has become increasingly important to me over the years, and it has nothing to do with not giving up the ship. But Jones said that, "It seems to be a law inflexible unto itself that he who will not risk cannot win." So if you don't take the risk of failing as a writer, you can never succeed as a writer. So you're sitting there, and you have this dream that says I could be a writer. Perhaps you could. But if you keep saying I could be a writer long enough, one day you wake up and it's turned into I could have been a writer, but the opportunity is gone now. Okay? So if you want to write, you have got to take the chance of being rejected, and possibly being rejected over and over again, until you find the right first reader, the right publisher that says, "Oh. I could do this." Okay? You have to remember while you're doing this, you control, or writers in general control a resource that publishers have to have. Publishers exist to publish. That means they need things to publish. Which means that they are constantly on the lookout for things to publish. Yes, they get a lot of dreck and there's… the first readers pile is the slush pile, and people read it and they go, "Oh, my God." I actually know of one book that was submitted on brown paper written in purple crayon. Okay? You don't get read when you do that kind of submission. But if you don't submit, you cannot possibly make a sale. I cannot emphasize… Over emphasize how important it is to be willing to do that. The other thing that I think you need to bear in mind is you can learn to write better with editorial support and with the practice. You can learn to write better. But what you have to be to make it work in this business is a storyteller. You have to have that bug. You can increase the skill with which you exercise that need to be a storyteller. But that's a critical element. If you don't feel that inside, if you don't feel the story that needs… That's growing that needs to come out, then you don't need to try and be an author. Because you're going to be fighting your own nature the entire time that you're trying to write a story. Unless that is what it is your nature to be. Birds gotta fly, fish gotta swim, storytellers have to tell stories. That's certainly true in my case.
 
[Brandon] Howard, you had something you wanted to say?
[Howard] Yeah. I was just going to… I like the John Paul Jones quote. We've had the opportunity to visit NASA a couple of times. They have that famous slogan, failure is not an option. Because there are times at which, boy, you just… You can't allow yourself to fail. I created a maxim within my own universe, which is "Failure is not an option. It's mandatory. The option is whether or not to let failure be the last thing you do."
[David] Yeah.
[Howard] The idea there… I mean, that doesn't get you past the John Paul Jones quote, which is that you have to take that chance in the first place. But I am always reminding myself that I am going to fail. It's just gonna happen. All I get to choose is whether or not I learn from it and whether I let myself quit.
[David] Well, NASA's failure is not an option stands on the shoulders of every single thing they did that failed as they were doing the engineering, when they were developing…
[Howard] They blew up so many rockets.
[Laughter]
[David] Absolutely. Okay? Failure is not an option means that ultimately we must succeed. It doesn't mean that we won't have the occasional catastrophe along the way. That we won't have Columbia. That we won't have…
[Dan] But, to your point about the whole premise of this episode, if NASA had never done anything that could have failed, they never would have gotten into orbit, they never would have gotten on the moon.
[David] Exactly.
[Dan] They had to be willing to take those risks and screw up horribly in order to achieve what they eventually have achieved.
 
[David] That's absolutely true. It's… Okay. No task worth doing springs fully blown and fully performed from the brow of Zeus. Okay? You have to go out there and make it work. All right? Now, most of the successful writers that I know would write whether anyone was buying their work or not. We have to do it. That's part of that storytelling bug that I was talking about. Okay? Whether we're writing for our own entertainment, our family's entertainment, or just because, my God, it's 2 o'clock in the morning, I can't sleep, I gotta do some more writing, we write. If you don't have that kind of… Robert Asprin once said, and Robert and I did not necessarily see together on all things…
[Laughter]
[David] But he said, "Successful authors are like rats. If we don't wear our fingers down on the keyboard every day, our fangs grow through our brains and kill us.
[Laughter]
[David] Okay? It's still a valid metaphor, even though I use voice recognition software when I write now. But it's true. If you… I have this need to be crafting stories. Okay? Now, for the last year or so, I haven't been, and that's because I face planted into a cement floor in Atlanta the day before Dragon Con and gave myself a concussion, broke my nose into places, stitches inside my mouth, the whole 9 yards. It has taken me effectively a year to recover from the concussion status to where I am once again really writing. Okay? It's been a real trial for me and for people who were expecting books from me and everything else, but sometimes, the need to tell stories is sort of temporarily stymied by the fact that, you know what, my brain's not working.
[Howard] One of the first things that I learned about… I'm a web cartoonist, and one of the first things I learned in this regard was when I still had a day job, early 2000's, we would take… I was in the software industry. We'd take two weeks off around Christmas, because kind of the whole industry wound down. For that two weeks, I told myself my Christmas present to me is that I'm going to pretend I'm a cartoonist full-time. I'm just going to do this. I would tell my plan to people. They're like, "You're going to pretend to have a job over Christmas?"
[Chuckles]
[Howard] "Okay, one, you're a broken human, and, two, what does your family think?" What I found is those are some of my fondest memories of this. Yeah. Storyteller gotta stug… Gotta story tell."
 
[David] There comes a time, in a given project or whatever, where it turns into work. Where you have to drive yourself to it. You have to do that. I have, in every book, I have what I call the chapter. That's the point at which I say, "This entire book is dreck. What was I thinking? Oh, my God, I can't get this to come together." The only thing that I can do is just keep grinding it out and saying, "Boy, this is sucky." Okay, that kind of thing? Then, when I get to the final edit, I can't identify the chapter.
[Howard] I was going to say, you've refined your process to the point that only happens for one chapter doing a project?
[Laughter]
[David] No, that's… Pretty much, yeah. You know. It's this kind of thing.
[Howard] Winning.
[David] Yeah.
 
[Brandon] Let's go ahead and… Let's stop for a book of the week, then we'll get back to it.
[David] Okay.
[Brandon] You have our book, or books of the week, this week.
[David] I have two. One is The Gordian Protocol, which came out in May, with Jacob Holo. Who is a BMW engineer in an alternate universe. I think that our backgrounds, the synergy was really, really good. He's got three or four self published novels out. This will be his first traditionally published novel. Is his first traditionally published novel. This was not one of the two I was thinking about, but he has just handed me the draft of the Valkyrie Protocol, which is the sequel. It's pretty much ready to go. We have to wait for him to get a hiatus in that real-life job to do a little tweaking that I pointed out to him. The other book that I've just handed in is the sequel to Out Of the Dark, which, yes, is the one with vampires in it. This one is rather cleverly titled Into the Light. I did it with Chris Kennedy, of the Four Horsemen universe and whatnot. He was my co-author on it. I'm really pleased with the way that it worked out. The vampires are a little flamboozled when they begin finding out some things about their own past and their own existence that neither they nor the earlier writers who didn't like the vampires didn't know. Okay? For… I won't go any deeper into it than that. But suffice it to say, that Vlad Tepes was a tiny bit mistaken about exactly how and what he became when he became it.
[Brandon] Excellent.
 
[Brandon] This topic's very interesting to me, because I work with a lot of aspiring writers. I teach at the University, and of course the podcast, and things like this. Looking back at myself when I was first making the choice to start writing, one of the things that I think holds back new writers, and I've kind of found some language that I can describe this more recently, is that, for me, there was this beautiful book I imagine somewhere out in the aether, right? It was like the Platonic ideal of a book. As, having read for many years, and sitting down to write the first time, it was like I knew this book was out there, but then my crude fingers could not get that book on the page. It was really frustrating to me. Because it felt like… It wasn't fear that I think stopped me, it was this sense that I was taking something beautiful and I was making it something flawed and terrible, because my skill wasn't good enough. I've found multiple other aspiring writers that kind of have this same attitude that… Less fear, more like, I guess I must not have done enough worldbuilding or I must not have thought it through enough, because this beautiful story, I just can't make it come out on the page.
[David] Well, that's…
[Brandon] So, I guess my question to you is strategies for writers who are having trouble making that transition, taking that chance, giving themselves permission to fail. What are some strategies that people could use to do that?
[David] Write the damn book.
[Laughter]
[David] And when you're done, if it's not what you thought you were going to come up with, file it under this was a learning experience, these are the things that I can see that I did wrong. Do those right in the next book. I have an entire file cabinet at home that has probably 300 short stories in it, that were written solely because they were things that I wanted to play with as a writer. How was I going to describe this? How was I going to handle this bit of characterization? You… Basically, this is one of the crafts that the only way you can learn to do it is to do it. There's not a credential program somewhere that is going to say, "Okay. Now you have a diploma. You'll go out there and be a successful writer." Okay? There are all kinds of courses that you can take and training that you can seek that will help you, give you tools that you might not have otherwise. But there's nobody out there who can teach you how to be a writer. Anybody who says we will teach you how to be a writer is taking your money. Okay? Because what they can do is they can teach you how they are a writer. They can teach you how these three guys over here are writers. They can't teach you how you're a writer. Okay? Characterization. Characterization is a critical component of any story you're going to tell. How do you build a character? Okay? One of the things that I do when I'm doing writing workshops is I rollup a character from one of the role-playing game series. I tell my students, I say, "Okay, this is the character that you have. This is the age, this is the gender, everything else. Go home, and between now and the next session, write me an explanation for why this character exists with these skills, these abilities, these disabilities." They frequently turn it into what is actually a very good short story. Okay? In getting out who this character is. That's the kind of thing that you have to be able to build on your own. I can give you that assignment, and tell you to go home and do it. But I can't say to you, the first way that you should do it is by doing thus and so, because the best that you could learn from that is how I do it. What makes a writer succeed is that writer's voice. You can take exactly the same story, the exact same plot, even the exact same characters by name. Okay? And have two different writers do the story. You have two totally different stories. Okay?
[Brandon] Absolutely.
 
[David] One of them is going to be the way that you tell the story, and one of them is going to be the way that somebody else tells the story. What makes you a successful writer is your voice finding its audience. You cannot do that trying to be someone else. You have to be you.
[Dan] Yeah. I… Finding that voice of your own is critical and it is difficult. I like to think about this in terms of Ender's Game. Because they had the kids in the Battle School, and they would fight against each other. Then there's this really critical scene towards the end of it, where Bean stands up in the lunch room and says, "Guys. We are doing the same strategies over and over and over. We will never learn anything new until we give ourselves the freedom to fail." That's when they kind of throw out the whole competition system and they say, "Okay. We're going to try this, and it probably will be awful, but we'll learn something from it.
[David] Yeah.
[Dan] So I imagine someone out there listening to this podcast thinking, lack of risk-taking is not my problem, I've tried everything I can think of. It's… I'm just not selling anything. Maybe what you need to do is something ridiculous. Maybe you need to change genre. Maybe you need to try something new. Maybe you need to put that big golden book that Brandon was talking about, that idealized thing that you have in mind, put that on a shelf and write something different.
[David] Okay. Let me tell you one of the most critical things that you should bear in mind as a writer. Write the story that interests you. They say, write what you know. Well, I don't know anybody who's been a starship captain. Okay? I'm sorry, there just aren't too many of them around for me to go interview, that kind of thing. But if there's a type of story that is especially suited to you, that you enjoy reading, etc. Point number one, you're not unique. That means there are other people who enjoy reading that same sort of story. It may not be what's currently hot. But publishers don't necessarily look for what's currently hot. They look for what they expect to be durable. Some publishers do. They want to push you into writing whatever is selling right now. Avoid them. Okay? I'm sorry. But you should. Okay? Now, if they say, "We'll pay you a stack of money to write it," then you can say to yourself, "Okay. They'll pay me a stack of money. I'll get some practice writing, and then I'll be able to go do what I want to do." But, point number one, if you like it, other people will like it. Point number two is if you like it, you will write it better than something you are writing that you feel that you have to write in order to be hot, in order to sell your work. Okay? Point number three is publishers are constantly looking for things to publish. Now, some publishers, for whatever combination of reasons, have blinders on or at least blinkers. Okay? Maybe, it's like, I don't agree with the political philosophy in that book. There's all kinds of idiosyncratic factors that can come into play. But the bottom line is publishers need stuff to publish. Keith Laumer once said that there's not the great unsold novel. There's only the great unwritten novel. Because if you write it, and it is good and you submit it long enough, you will sell it because publishers are looking for things to publish. The editor who discovered Thomas Wolfe… Thomas Wolfe had been rejected about eight or nine dozen times. Okay? Then this guy found… Discovered Thomas Wolfe and made his entire career out of the fact that he was the guy who discovered Thomas Wolfe. He was asked by another editor at one point. The guy said, "I read the first quarter of a million words, and it sucked. Where did you realize…?" He said, "About word 300,000."
[Hmm, hmm, hmm.]
[David] Okay? What I'm saying to you is that eventually, if what you have done is publishable, it will find a buyer. Sometimes, even if what you've done isn't punishable… Publishable. Punishable? There was…
[Laughter]
[David] I've read some horrible books before. But even if what you've written in its current form isn't publishable, sometimes you'll get that little comment back that will tell you why it wasn't. More often than not, you'll get a form letter that says, "I'm sorry. It doesn't really meet our needs at this moment. Etc., etc." But sometimes you'll get that little flicker of a response, and you go, "Oh!" Now, I've been doing this… I've supported myself as a writer since I was 17. I'm 67 this year. So I've been writing… I've been earning my living pushing words around for 50 years. Okay? I've been a published novelist for… Well, we sold the first… I sold the first book in April 1989. So this is the 30th year since I sold the first book. In the course of that time, I like to think I've learned a few things. Okay? There are some very simple things that an author… Okay. For example. Any aspiring writer should realize that the most important word in any sentence is the verb. Choose your verbs wisely. Don't say, "He came quickly to his feet." Say, "He leapt to his feet. He jerked to his feet. He jerked upright." Okay? Never use an -ing verb when you can avoid it, unless you want the voice of what you're writing to be passive. All right? Never bury dialogue inside a paragraph. If there's dialogue in a paragraph, start the paragraph with the dialogue and arrange the internal mechanics to make that work. Okay? Don't worry about choppy paragraphs. Worry about where you want to direct the reader's eye. You're setting the cadence, you're creating the rhythm. Maybe you need short choppy sentences and paragraphs at this point. Maybe you need one line paragraphs for emphasis. Okay? Maybe the one line paragraph that you need is, "In the world blew up." Okay? Because you're in the middle of a combat situation, there's a missile incoming, the character you're writing about doesn't know it. There's combat chatter, they're saying, "We're under fire," the character's turning around. Then the world blew up. As a separate paragraph. So think about those sorts of things when you're writing. That's not a question of my telling you to write in my voice. Because these are things that any writer can profit from, in the way that they construct and craft sentences, and sentences are what you build books out of.
[Brandon] We could probably sit here for another hour and listen to this.

[Brandon] Yes.
[David] Something to do. I would say, go home and create a character. Okay? Not one that you set out to build because this is going to go in your story. But give yourself the assignment of taking a character that you didn't create because you rolled it up or whatever. Then, build in your worldbuilding bible, in your tech bible, whatever, build why that character is who that character is. Because stories are about characters. If the character is not interesting to the reader, the story will go nowhere. If the character is not interesting to you, and understood by you, you will not be able to communicate it to the reader. Your characters will still, if you do this long enough, the characters will evolve in the storytelling, and they should. So, as the life experience of that character is shared with your readers in multiple books, you have to understand how that character changes and incorporate it. Characters are what stories are about. Sentences are how you tell the story. Get those two things right, and the story will usually succeed. A weak story that is well told will succeed, where a strong story that is weakly told fails.

[Mary] So, I have a ton of astronaut questions I've been wanting to ask you. So I'm afraid that this is going to be just a please tell us all the things, Kjell.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] I'm happy to share.
[Mary] Okay. So. You've talked about the vertigo in space. People… Like, that's all over the NASA website, people talk about that. But when you come back to earth, and you have vertigo again. How much is that like benign positional vertigo or is it completely in its own class of…
[Kjell] Yeah. So, when we say vertigo, I think that people have different interpretations of what that means. Dizziness, lightheadedness, actual spinning. I have a colleague that upon arriving in space, so right at the main engine cut off, after that third stage cut off, and now you are officially in weightlessness, felt like they were basically doing backflips.
[Mary] Wow.
[Kjell] So their… And just had this sensation… And I'm motioning with my hands, and I realize that the listeners can't…
[Chuckles]
[Kjell] See that, but… Essentially, felt like they were flipping backwards just constantly. They were able to get over that. I did not feel vertiginous, I did not have dizziness at all when I… Once I arrived on orbit. So after landing, there again, it really depends on the individual. Some people will feel vertiginous, things will be spinning. For me, if I kept my head very still, I actually felt fine. It is any type of acceleration. So tilting my head forward, pitching my head forward, or turning my head side to side very quickly, the sensation I would receive was far out of proportion to the movement that my head would make. So I could really get my kind of gyros spinning with very quick head movements. In particular, if I pitched my head forward, I would have fallen over. So you will see, if you look very closely at the astronauts that have just landed, so… What we're doing now, of course, is landing in the Soyuz space capsule. They carry them… They'll pull them out of the capsule, they'll put them on a lawn chair, put them on the ground. If you watch very closely, they'll keep their head… Most will keep their heads very still. So if somebody talks to them, they'll kind of look over at them…
[Laughter]
[Kjell] And smile, but they keep their head very still. We know this. So if you were feeling pretty good, you will actually move your head around a lot, because that gets you credit from your buddies, that your colleagues are like, "Man, he's doing great. Look at how he's moving his head around."
[Laughter]
[Mary] And you're like, "I am in a lawn chair."
[Laughter]
[Kjell] Exactly. So. Again, it really is up to the individual, their individual response. One of the… I mean, just very surreal experience that I had prior to launch, we had a… Before we leave Star City to [Bikaner?], we have a departure breakfast. Kind of a ceremonial toast to the crew that's departing for their launch. So all of the cosmonauts that live there in Star City will come to wish the crew farewell. So this… Let's see, it's Leonov, the first person ever to do a spacewalk. He is at the departure breakfast, and he gathers our crew together to just give us some tips and tricks as we're getting ready to fly. He said, "If you start to feel sick when you get onto orbit, just keep your head very still. Just don't move your head around." I just kind of took this picture in my brain of I'm getting flight advice from Alexey Leonov.
[Chuckles]
[Kjell] I mean, this is…
[Mary] That's amazing.
[Kjell] Very, very surreal.
 
[Brandon] You were telling us earlier, at lunch you were talking about the fact that when you first get up there, you get flu-like symptoms, because your blood, which is used to being pulled down by gravity, just kind of floods your whole body.
[Kjell] Yeah. Yeah, so we call this a fluid shift. So when you stand up on Earth, your blood… Gravity pulls it down into your legs, and we have physiologic mechanisms that are constantly working to keep the blood up at your brain, perfusing your brain. So your muscles are squeezing on the veins to push the blood up, your heart might beat a little bit faster when you first stand up, and all those mechanisms continue to work in weightlessness, but there's no gravity pulling that blood. It's not counteracting anything. So what that results in is this net shift of fluid up into your head and chest. So your face… Your head feels very full, you feel congested. If you look at your legs, they look incredibly skinny, and we call those bird legs. That's a part of, I think, this space adaptation syndrome of space motion sickness. But that fluid shift persists, really, kind of persists throughout the mission.
[Howard] That's why there are no giraffes in space. Because their heads would just explode.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] You know what… So I worked in a cardio… The space physiology laboratory. It used to be at NASA Ames Research Center. The giraffe is one of the animals that we looked… Giraffes and snakes that climb trees are animals that we looked at to try and understand how, like in a giraffe, that changes that hydrostatic column. When it bends down to drink, I mean…
[Howard] That's what I'm talking about, the amount of heart… pressure…
[Kjell] Absolutely.
[Howard] You gotta do to get blood up into that head. You put a giraffe in orbit, he hits freefall, and just [explosion sound].
[Laughter]
[Mary] Yeah, but the thing he was saying is when the giraffe puts their head down, that that shifts.
[Kjell] That almost gets you to the point where… Yeah. Now you're only dealing with the giraffe's innate blood pressure, but the fact now the hydrostatic column is actually increasing pressure down. So what mechanisms, intrinsic mechanisms, are there to prevent the giraffe's head from exploding when it bends down to take a drink?
[Laughter]
[Dan] So Howard's [telling a dumb joke]
[Kjell] I didn't think I'd be talking about… 
[Dan] About a giraffe exploding, and you saying, "No, that's actually a real thing."
[Laughter]
[Dan] That's my favorite thing that's happened today.
[Howard] Can you give me a little more credit than that? Because… 
[Mary] No. No, we cannot.

[Brandon] I'm going to do our book of the week. I think it's a very appropriate one. We're going to do R is for Rocket, by Ray Bradbury.
[Mary] Oh, yeah.
[Brandon] Which we haven't ever done, and it's my favorite Ray Bradbury collection. If you haven't read any Ray Bradbury, you're missing out. R Is for Rocket has my single favorite Ray Bradbury story of all time, Frost and Fire, in it. Which is about a planet where people live seven days. But it's also got A Sound of Thunder, which is his most… Second most famous probably short story. It's got The Long Rain, which is… It's got so many great things. It's just awesome. And it's fun, because, I mean, it was written in the 60s, right? In the 50s and 60s, and looking at space travel through the eyes of someone living back then and comparing it to now, I think it's just fine. I actually recently read a bunch of Bradbury stories. It's just delightful. I absolutely love reading that period.
[Howard] I remember reading A Sound of Thunder in high school, and really, really liking it, while at the same time being very, very disturbed by it.
[Brandon] Oh, it's… 
[Howard] It's a fun story.
[Brandon] Point of… 
[Howard] That's what it's for.
 
[Brandon] Let's go back to questions for an astronaut.
[Mary] Yeah. Okay. So I ask this question anytime someone says, "I would like to learn how to play bagpipes."
[Laughter]
[Mary] Why? Why would you like to learn to play bagpipes? Specifically, why did you think, "You know what, I'm going into space. I think I'll learn to play bagpipes in space."
[Kjell] Well, I grew up in England, from… I spent from my third grade until my freshman year in England, for the first four years near London, and then three years in Cambridge. I just… I fell in love with the bagpipes while living over there. I remember my parents taking us to a military tattoo, essentially a parade, and the pipes ushering in this parade.
[Mary] They're good outdoors.
[Kjell] Yes. Yes, they are good for the outdoors. I have always wanted to learn how to play the bagpipes. I thought… I'm not sure what I was thinking.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] But I thought it would be fun to play the bagpipes on the International Space Station. So we get a small personal allotment [garbled]
[Dan] Did any of the other people on the space station agree with [garbled]
[Kjell] None of them got to weigh in on this decision. The commander did not know I was going to have them up there until I was like, "Hey, Scott? Do you mind if I play the bagpipes?" I don't know if I even asked him. I think I started playing and…
[Dan] The commander's like, "Everyone, meet the new guy. His name is Kjell. And he brought bagpipes."
[Laughter]
[Mary] To an enclosed space that you cannot leave without a rocketship.
[Kjell] Yes. You cannot leave. Although you might be forced to leave.
[Chuckles]
[Kjell] So, to… I'm going to take a little bit of credit here. I found the absolute furthest place away from crew quarters to practice. So that was in one of our storage modules, and started practicing.
[Howard] Is that the one where the lighting is on the wrong side?
[Kjell] No, different one, different one.
[Howard] Oh, okay.
[Kjell] But I would poke my head out to see if anybody was like…
[Chuckles]
[Kjell] Reacting. And then started to normalize a little bit, and just was playing in various modules. Then, later on, asked Scott and Kimiya both, very pointedly, "Hey, does this bother you? Is this okay?" Scott said… You know what, actually, he grew up in New Jersey, it reminded him of firefighters playing when he was growing up. So it was a little… Probably not as well played, but a picture of home for him, during the one year mission. So… Then, Kimiya, honestly, is such a great guy. So easy to get along with, that even if it was the worst thing ever for him to listen to me playing the bagpipes, he would not admit to it, and he would just say, "Oh, no, it's fine."
[Chuckles]
[Howard] There is something to be…
[Kjell] So I have very supportive roommates.
[Howard] There is something to be said for being so willing to get along with other people that if those bagpipes make you happy, they make me happy. That is, there's something to that.
 
[Kjell] There absolutely is, and I think it's one of… Especially for long-duration spaceflight, it is one of the most important things that we bring with us as a crew member, and that is what we describe as expeditionary behavior. That is, first step, get yourself squared away. To be competent at doing the things that you need to do to be successful. To start working on time, to be efficient. So that then, you have enough bandwidth to help your crewmates. So you're squared away, and now the focus of your day is what can I do make his life better today? Scott's life, and Kimiya's life better today? What can I do? If we are all thinking that way, you just get along. Part of that is also what things do I do that irritate other people? I want to retract those friction points. What are the things that maybe he does that irritate me? I just I figure out ways to remove myself from that situation or do something differently, or, if we absolutely have to, have the conversation about hey, when I am practicing robotic arm operations, I'd really appreciate it if you weren't playing the bagpipes.
[Laughter]
[Howard] On the end of the robotic arm.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] So, it's really interesting. Right before my mission, I was thinking I'm going to spend six months in an enclosed space with the same-ish five people. We did have a small crew change out… In the middle of the mission, but… The same people. For that entire time. I thought I really wonder how this is going to go? I mean, is this… Are we going to… Are there going to be any issues? It was three months into the mission before I even thought about it again. Everybody just… Particularly in our crew, and I know other crews are like this, just work really hard to take care of each other to get along. So that ultimately, we can have a successful mission, and a productive mission.
[Howard] One of the ways I've heard it described, a guy I met on an Air Force Base who had been on submarines, was in that environment, we don't have the luxury of not getting along.
[Kjell] That's true. I mean, if you want to be successful…
[Mary] [garbled] the Internet.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] You have to get along, you have to figure out what is it that we need to do? Otherwise, the mission will not be successful. That is, as professionals up there, with the investment that our respective nations have made…
[Dan] Oh, God.
[Kjell] We cannot afford to not be successful.
[Howard] I'm being paid way too much to be a jerk.
[Laughter]
 
[Dan] Okay. I have a question for you. This is a question we typically ask on our What Do Writers Get Wrong episodes, but I'm curious, so I'm going to ask it anyway. What have you seen in media, in a book or a movie, a depiction of astronauts that you just think is… Just bugs you to death, and what else have you seen that you really loved, that they got something really right.
[Kjell] Wow. So, books are difficult, because a lot of… I think what really strikes me is movement in space and the physics of space. That really isn't depicted in a book. They talk about getting from one place to another. What's very jarring for me is seeing people floating through a capsule or through a space station… And it's not that I'm thinking about hey, Newton's third law of gravity. It's that just did not look right. It's somebody that's floating straight, and then all of a sudden, takes a hard right turn floating…
[Dan] Without touching anything.
[Kjell] Without grabbing anything or holding onto anything. Just immediately, it's like, "Okay, that was very weird." So it's things like that. Just the physics that I think become very second nature on orbit that you really have to think about if you have never been in that environment. I think that is viscerally what strikes me. I think from a storyline, the generation of drama from things that really don't need to be dramatic, when there are other things about living in space and operating in that environment. I mean, there are any number of things that can kill us at any time…
[Laughter]
[Kjell] And to come up with something goofy when…
[Chuckles]
[Kjell] It's vacuum. It's cold.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] Vacuum out there, people. I mean…
[Mary] There's plenty there.
[Kjell] I mean, yeah. There's plenty of risk there. So I think that those are things that kind of…
[Howard] Please don't add death to my job in new ways.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] Exactly.
[Howard] I already have a very long list of deaths.
 
[Dan] So, can you give us some examples of people who, or artists, that you feel have done a really good job?
[Kjell] You know what, I really enjoyed reading Andy Weir's The Martian. As a crew, it was really cool. We got to watch that movie before it was released to the public. We got to watch it on the space station.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] We got to watch this movie, and I really enjoyed the book. We got to watch it in space. So…
[Mary] I'm sure that some place, Andy Weir is going, "They watched my movie in space!"
[Laughter]
[Mary] That's what I would do.
[Howard] My head is doing the zero gravity giraffe right now.
[Laughter]
[Dan] We have a good writing prompt.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] There was… There were things about that that showed clearly they had done their research. There were things that nobody else would have caught that just resonated with us during that movie. One of them was when the main character, when Mark Watney is looking through everybody's stuff to look for food. So as he is pulling out the food and going through the menus, he's listing like beef stroganoff and chicken teriyaki and rice pilaf. So I'm watching him do that, and then I look at our food pantry right over here, and that's our… Those are… That's stuff from our menu.
[Laughter]
[Kjell] I'm like, "Oh, my gosh. That's our menu." So just little details that really nobody else would have noticed that just make a story like that more real.
[Mary] That's fantastic.
 
[Brandon] Well, I think we are out of time. Do you really want to do that as our writing prompt, Dan?
[Laughter]
[Mary] Zero gravity giraffe.
[Dan] The zero gravity giraffe? So Howard said a phrase, "I'm doing the zero gravity giraffe." Find your own interpretation of what that means, and write a story about it.

Key Points: Heroism -- the what-makes-you-cheer moments. Sacrifice. "I wish I could have done that." Taking risks. Facing fears. Hard decisions and demonstrations of skill or commitment. Working hard and achieving victory (aka Horatio Alger's rags-to-riches). Some elements include the decision, crises of faith, foreshadowing, the possibility of failure, and the heroic payoff. Consider making it clear that the hero's strengths are not enough -- but he squeaks by on other attributes. Make sure to help the reader believe that the hero might fail. Let the victory have costs for the hero. One person can make a difference, can do incredible things against adversity, but it has costs. That's the heroic concept.
